The Ultimate Classroom

This is the open source design page for creating an all-ages learning space based on the combined principles of Montessori, Waldorf, Orff, Reggio, Multi-Intelligence, Bloom’s Taxonomy, Study Tech, and Imagine Wisdom Education. We call this the Ultimate Classroom and it is designed to stimulate ideas for your own educational environment or for use as complete building blueprints and setup plans. These plans will evolve as needed for building a complete Highest Good Education school on the One Community property. As we develop this first structure and others later, we will use this page to open source share all aspects of the design, development, licensing and permitting, expansion, setup, etc. through multi-media presentations for easy viewing, downloading, duplication, and modification.

WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE CLASSROOM

the ultimate classroom, One Community Kids, enlightened children, children of the future, conscious kids, conscientious kids, kid leaders, leadership and children, children leading the world, sustainable education, Highest Good education, One CommunityThe Ultimate Classroom is a straw bale construction building designed to host the Highest Good education program. We are open source sharing the complete design, construction process, and evolution of this educational space as part of our global transformation and sharing strategy. The video below gives an overview of the structure and details for each room can be found in the Ultimate Classroom Details section.

When thinking of the Ultimate Classroom as part of One Community, it is helpful to note we are also designing the complete community environment to contribute to the education of all our students. Offering an on-property internship, children who demonstrate interest and enough maturity to be safe and proactive will be invited to participate in the daily operation activities, open source creation process (video, website, and written content creation), hands-on construction of the 7-villages, food production, preparation, and the open source botanical gardens, permaculture, animal husbandry, artisan skills as part of the Cob Village, and any other areas that interest them.

Designing and free-sharing this classroom is purposed to stimulate ideas for new-paradigm learning and provide a complete and duplicable model for anyone interested in a community-operated education model.

It includes different colored and themed sections representing all the colors of the rainbow (Idea source was I-WE) and each focused on specific subjects and multiple curriculum areas. This layout will provide a stimulating, captivating, beautiful learning environment that covers all traditional subject matter and a broad diversity of additional subjects and topics too.

The red room stands for life, vitality, strength, and physical nature of all things. This themed area will include a climbing and exercising component, as well as musical instruments. The subjects of Health and Music will be the focus of this room. The green room is about nature, ecological systems, and our interaction and connection with both. It is also about our connections to one another as parts of the human ecological system, and how these systems are interdependent. The subject of Science will also be a focus of this room. The blue room stands for technology, innovation, communication, empathy, feelings, and the ability to express oneself. This room (along with the indigo room) will contain computers, tablets, and other technology for accessing the internet and multi-media creation. Learning aids and books in this room will focus on communication and multi-media expression. The subject of Technology and Innovation will also be a focus of this room. INDIGO ROOM – SOCIAL SCIENCES

The One Community Ultimate Classroom | Final Render | Indigo Room

The indigo room represents global and historical perspectives and celebrating diversity. This room (like the blue room) will contain computers, tablets, and other technology for accessing the internet. Learning aids and books in this room will focus on history and different cultures and cultural practices. The subject of Social Science will also be a focus of this room. VIOLET ROOM – ART/MUSIC, TRADES, & VALUES

The violet “room” will be represented by the center of this building. This large and open space will be used for morning circle or other group activities during the day and for theater, presentations, or community social events after school hours. In daily use, this area will embody imagination, self-expression, and personal enrichment. Pull-down security barriers will allow us to block off any or all of the surrounding rooms when we want to use this area for plays, presentations, social or recreational events. A portable stage, costumes, and props will be available for this area too. The subjects of Arts/Music and Trades and Values will be a focus of this room/area. ADDITIONAL GENERAL GUIDELINES

Here are some general classroom design guidelines from our research into the most prominent progressive education methodologies in the world:

  • Keep the central space open
  • Related book section in each colored area (Idea source was I-WE)
  • Provide a variety of bean bags and other comfortable places for sitting
  • It is important to fill you classroom with plants and natural light (Idea source was Reggio)
  • Natural toys without paint etc. are preferable so kids can use their imagination more (Idea source was Waldorf)
  • Natural containers and building materials are preferable to plastic and other synthetics (Idea source was Waldorf)
  • Place books for younger learners at lower levels and books for older learners at higher levels (Idea source was I-WE)
  • Rooms are work/learning environments with a central circle being the ‘creation’ area (Idea source was Bloom’s Taxonomy)
  • Use theme-colored curtains and cabinets to cover toys and reduce distraction when they’re not in use (Idea source was I-WE)
  • Specialty classrooms such as the “Health Zone/romper room” and “Practical Living Area” (red room); “Reading Nook” and a “Communication and Sharing Zone” (orange room), “Collaboration and Cooperation Zone” (yellow room); “Science Lab” (green room); “Computer Lab” and “Inventors Workshop” (blue room); “Global Perspective and History Zone” (indigo room), “Art and Expression Zone” and a theater stage (violet room), etc. all offer exposure starting at preschool (Idea source was Reggio)
  • As much area as is possible and safe to allocate around the building is also part of “the classroom.” This will include a fountain with fish, other farm-type animals if appropriate, an organic garden with a small greenhouse, a big playground with a diversity of climbing and imagination-stimulating components, sandboxes, tunnels, and space to run and play (Idea source was I-WE)

 

ADDITIONAL LEARNING AREAS TO CONSIDER

  • O: Communication and Sharing Area: An area purposed for sharing feelings through language, art, and dance
  • Y: The Peace Table: Conflict resolution table and area to engage in thoughtful conversation (Idea source was Montessori)
  • V: Kitchen Area: With real bowls etc. to teach handling fragile objects… and cleaning up if they break (Idea source was Montessori)
  • R: Practical Living Area: An area designated for learning to use your hands: tools, sew, fold, button, etc. (Idea source was Montessori)
  • G: Earth Area: Including plants and other living things taken care of by the class – may be outside (Idea source was Multi-Intelligence)
  • O: Reading Nook: Specific space designed for quiet reading: rocking chair, reading lamp, bookshelf, beanbags (Idea source was Montessori)
  • I: Global Perspectives and History Zone: An area designed for exploring and sharing what kids learn about different cultures and perspectives
  • V: Artistic Creativity Area: Specifically for art, music, and dancing (by mirror and Montessori dress-up clothes?) (Idea source was Waldorf)
  • All of One Community will be a learning and collaboration environment for young people mature enough to participate in its components

 

OTHER CLASSROOM IDEAS

  • Placards with key ideas and illustrations on the walls (Idea source was Study Tech)
  • Toddler-height mirrors and shelves and toddler-sized brooms, tools, etc. (Idea source was Montessori)
  • Complete environment is designed to encourage imagination through learning materials that initiate curiosity (Idea source was Montessori and Orff Schulwerk)
  • Space for students to gather together in a large circle at times and smaller circles spaced out (depending on their instrument/activity) at other times (Idea source was Orff Schulwerk)

AN ALTERNATIVE PROJECTION DOME DESIGN

The Ultimate Classroom was originally designed to use a Projection Dome for the primary structure. These domes are most commonly used for promotional events and festivals and allow for 360-degree projections on the the ceiling and walls of the dome. They can be set up in a day by two people and are considered temporary structures that may not need permitting in many locations.

We redesigned the Ultimate Classroom designs to the ones above for a diversity of reasons:

  • Design Limited Visibility of All Children at Once: The central structure added to the middle to support the projector would have made it impossible to see all the children at once. Even with windows allowing a view through the central structure, there were still blind spots. This created a safety hazard.
  • Stairs and Elevated Central Area Safety Hazard: The stairway to the elevated central area and the central area itself being an elevated platform also created safety hazards. Closing off this area whenever not used with a supervising instructor could address this.
  • Energy Efficiency and Challenges Insulating the Structures: Because projections domes are usually temporary structures used for events, they aren’t designed to be very energy efficient. We explored modifying them to correct this but the cost became prohibitive. The high-ceiling dome shape was also a contributor, predictably creating a space that would take a long time to heat up due to all the heat rising into the (hard to insulate) ceiling.
  • Durability Concerns: We also had challenges with durability. Again, this was mainly because the projection domes are not designed to be long-term structures. We felt we could easily make the domes last a couple years but the internal cover needed for the projected images was much more of a challenge. We saw the upkeep and potential need for regular replacement as less sustainable than we desired.
  • Permitting Concerns: An event dome like this can often be classified as a temporary structure and therefor not need to be permitted. In our case though, using it as a school and also building so much to support it and within it, we realized that a permitted structure would most likely be needed and would be preferable anyway.
  • Wanted More Space for Other Community Activities: We also wanted more space for educational, social, and recreational activities both during school and outside of school hours as part of the One Community fulfilled living model. A more open and larger floor plan started to make sense.
  • Lack of Natural Light: The projection dome requires an internal cover for the entire dome. This cover could not be removed and was not conducive to any type of window. This meant natural light would be limited to windows on the ground floor. We felt substituting imagery (even vivid and magnificent imagery) for natural light was, after much consideration, not the ideal environment we wanted to create for ourselves and our students.
  • Cost: Estimated cost for a projection dome, without all the additional components we’d be constructing, was $25,000 to 35,000 dollars. This was just too much for us considering all the challenged identified above.

We still think the original designs or some other version of a projection-dome design could be a good option for the right situation though. So we share here our original images showing what we’d planned:

Our classroom design using these domes included elevating the entire dome and adding a central loft. The central loft was to provide a meeting space on top, play space below, and a mounting place for the projector so projections happen above the main classroom spaces around the perimeter of the structure. This created shadow-free projection and classroom space below that would have otherwise been wasted. It also created a safe place to keep the projector.

Q: How do you intend to provide classroom construction blueprints?

Complete permitted plans will be provided as soon as we have a permitted structure.

Q: Why did you choose straw bale construction?

Straw bale construction is a fairly easy sustainable building method. Our research on the most sustainable insulations also showed straw bale construction as one of the best. Additionally, this structure is part of Phase 1 of our 7 sustainable villages construction plan. Building this as part of Phase 1 will provide beneficial experience that we’ll then be able to apply when we build the Straw Bale Village in Phase 2.

Q: How did you choose the shape of this structure?

This structure was designed to provide natural lighting, passive solar heating, and natural cooling. The orientation of the windows provides natural light and supports passive solar heating. Natural cooling and fresh air can be supplied by opening the clerestory windows, heat exiting the building through the roof there will draw air thought the lower windows and cool the structure.
