A NOTE ABOUT ALL ONE COMMUNITY LESSON PLANS
The One Community lesson plans are intentionally designed for use in ANY educational environment and with ALL educational, cultural, religious/spiritual, and philosophical approaches to teaching and learning. They are designed without an ideological approach and specifically so they can be adapted to include the views, preferences, methodologies, and/or ideologies preferred by different parents and teachers.
For maximum flexibility and adaptation, they are also designed to be combined to teach multiple subjects at the same time. Doing this increases the creativity, effectiveness, and fun of your learning environment. Once we are on the property and operating our version of the complete school and Education for Life program, we will be adding video examples of how to combine the lessons. In the meantime, visit the Teaching Strategies page for a list of suggestions.

TEACHING ARTS AND TRADES WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF OPPOSITES
|
|
The Arts
- Think of 3 spheres of life and artistically represent* its smallest and biggest objects (e.g. 1 sphere: fruits ” blueberries and watermelon, etc.).
- Using paints, make an artistic representation* of Earth during night and day.
- Remake your favorite piece of classical music* into pop or heavy metal music – or vice versa.
- Make a sculptural representation* of two types of energies (e.g. male/female, hot/cold, happy/sad, etc.).
- Create an artistic piece* or individual performance* showing the connection, interrelation, and/or transformation of life and death.
- Do research on romanticism and realism in arts. Using 2 very different types of art not usually combined, make one artistic representation* of a combination of these two styles.
- Compose a symphony, write a play, or create a different type of a large scale multi-person performance* that depicts and exemplifies opposites in at least 10 different ways (lighting, music, dialogue, what is represented, etc.).
|
|
Trades
- With help from an adult, make 3 food ‘dishes’* which would combine two opposite flavors ” salty and sweet, bitter and sweet, sour and sweet, etc. Describe your experience of these differences and recreate your favorite to bring in and share with others.
- Make an accessory* using two contrasting colors, styles, sizes, functions.
- Make a costume* that combines two opposites – scary/funny, happy/sad, dark/light etc.
- Make an item of clothing* which would transform from a lighter (summer) type into a thicker (winter) one or a bright color to a light color or a formal to informal style.
- Make a piece of furniture* that can be converted for opposite usages like sleeping/wakefulness, exercise/rest, work/play, etc.
- Create an indoor summer/spring and winter/fall greenhouse* for one climatic zone and simultaneously grow flowers of two opposite seasons.
- Do research on the opposite mythological, philosophical, and spiritual concepts and apply your findings to do interior design* of a house, or commercial space, etc. and implement it.

* Please note that anything with an asterisk is just a suggestion. The diversity of options with asterisks are interchangeable and purposed to stimulate your own ideas. Any one of these suggestions could be replaced with a written paper, any form of art project (drawing, painting, music, paper mache, clay, wood, knitting/embroidery, metals, etc. etc.), an experiment, a presentation, a mindmap, a computer program, a web design project, a piece of poetry or a song, an interpretive dance or play, a group project, or anything else. What we feel is most important is that both the Learner and the Teacher agree on an exercise/activity they both feel would be maximally engaging, fun, and effective. If you come up with an idea we haven’t already thought of, please share it with us.

- Think of what emotions you like feeling and which ones you do not enjoy. How could you change from one you do not enjoy into one you do? Practice changing unwanted emotional states into their opposites. Keep a log* of the following for each: what do you require, how did it go, and how could you get better at it.
- Take a mindful walk in your neighborhood focusing on finding 10-15 opposites along the way. Afterward, create a fun way to present/share* your findings.
- Thoroughly explore and then explain in a short speech* the dietary differences between three pairs of dietary opposites.
- Explore male and female differences: hormones, sexuality, energies, strengths/weaknesses, etc. and what you have noticed and experienced with emotional expressions/needs, and write a 3+ page paper* on your findings.
- Study pros and cons of a balanced (all foods) diet versus vegetarian/vegan/fruitarian/mono diets, etc. in terms of health. Present* your recommendations to your peers.
- Create a presentation* to equally argue in support of opposite concepts in nutrition, and physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of health and work out an experimental program for health development which would suggest alteration of opposite techniques/methodologies/approaches/etc.
- Conduct research on bios and major ideas of the proponents of diametrically opposite approaches in 4 spheres of people’s health: nutrition, and physical, emotional, and spiritual growth; then create a detailed and comprehensive action plan*, and objective method of evaluating its effectiveness and implement, and assess your own plan using a group of 10 or more people.
