Reconnecting people with their food, and re-teaching people how to grow their own food, has the potential to positively and permanently change the world. It is possible to grow food that is fresher, healthier, and more diverse than what is currently found in the grocery stores. When grown properly, this food can also be grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. This page is a guide to unique varieties that most people have never seen of common foods.
This page includes the resources to buy seeds and grow these amazing foods yourself. It also includes One Community’s open source large-scale gardening strategy to produce enough of these amazing foods to feed over 100 people within 1 year. All foods that will additionally be grown and accessioned as part of our open source botanical garden model to maximize the benefits of what we learn for application as part of our self-sufficient and self-replicating teacher/demonstration community, village, and city strategy.
This open source hub includes the following sections:

As part of One Community’s global change methodology, we’ve created this page for open source sharing a large-scale gardening strategy designed for easily feeding over 100 people within 1 year when combined with our open source hoop house strategy and humane raising of rabbits, chickens, and goats. These areas of food production, plus planting the One Community food forest, will be Phase I of the One Community Highest Good food plan. Phase II will be construction of the aquapini and walipini structures. This large-scale gardening plan will also be:
Through careful planning, holistic gardening approaches (companion planting, composting, etc.), and experimentation with different species, large-scale gardening can affordably produce large volumes of locally grown/fresher, higher quality, and significantly more diverse foods than what is available in almost all grocery stores. Here’s a guide to what would best be grown in-ground versus what you can grow in pots:
Reconnecting more people with their food, and re-teaching people how to grow their own food, has the potential to positively and permanently change the world. It is possible to grow food that is fresher, healthier, tastes better, and more diverse. When grown properly, this food can also be grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides too.
Many people already realize this. Just look at these statistics on why people choose to grow their own food:
We see this as both inspirational and motivational and One Community is sharing this open source gardening strategy to demonstrate and teach these things even more. As a foundation of our self-sufficient and self-replicating teacher/demonstration community, village, and city strategy, we are teaching these things on a large scale to make them easier and more accessible to groups as small as twenty and scaling up to hundreds.

Individual varieties of each crop species will be interplanted with different species, rather than, for example, all the potato varieties in one row. There are reasons for this; first, it helps break up the monoculture of any one species. By scattering the cultivars widely across the garden, they are less prone to insect and disease problems. Second, it aids in selfing and pollination control. Since many of the varieties we will plant are rare heirlooms, it fits our conservation ethic to multiply them for distribution to others. This can only be accomplished if they are prevented from crossing with other varieties – spatial separation aids in this, although we will also use techniques such as bagging, hand pollination, etc. where appropriate.
Many plants in this section also benefit from dense planting. The concept of rows is an outgrowth of mechanical farming and plants do not grow this way in nature. With this in mind, we will be demonstrating permaculture principles and a more nature-inspired planting approach that considers the beds themselves as “rows,” having, e.g. 10 or 20 feet of row densely planted to a variety or combination of varieties. This will allow us to companion plant in a way that more closely mimics nature while also forming a living mulch, conserving water, and using nutrient (compost) more efficiently.
Here is some additional information on companion planting, insects, and spacing:
We will open source share here videos, tutorials, planting maps (like the hoop house maps below), and other specifics described above once we know the location-related details developed through creating them on the property. The 18 initial hoop houses, however, have complete planting maps you can see below. Use the numbers in the key correlate with the plant codes for easy reference. To find the plant codes, you can click to enlarge a map and then just use the “Find” function (Command F on a Mac/Control F on a PC) to search this page for that specific code, then click the associated link for additional details.

Here are some great videos showing both what is possible and why you might want to care:
This page is for open source sharing a large-scale gardening strategy designed for feeding over 100 people within 1 year when combined with our open source hoop house strategy. In-ground growing, hoop houses, and the One Community food forest will be Phase I of the One Community Highest Good food plan. Phase II will be construction of the aquapini and walipini structures. Our goal in open source sharing these food production methodologies is reconnecting people with their food and re-teaching people how to grow their own food. We are doing this as part of our global-change methodology because we feel it is important for people to understand that it is possible to grow food that is fresher, healthier, more diverse, and grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides too. We see open source sharing this as for The Highest Good of All and just one of many ways to inspire people to consider self-sufficient and self-replicating teacher/demonstration communities, villages, and cities as a worthwhile living option.
Q: Is One Community going to be a vegetarian community?
The One Community team consists of vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores. In accordance with our philosophy for The Highest Good of All we are maintaining a non-idealogical approach to food choices. That said, also in accordance with this philosophy, we will only support and consume food items that are ethically and sustainably raised, managed, and produced. The consensus process will be used to decide the evolution of the One Community food plan.
As we develop our food resources over time, the open source botanical garden model is important in allowing us to know the breeding lines that go into developing crops that are well adapted to the site. Accession records allow us to know that if we selected variety X from source A for early maturation or other traits for several generations, then variety X sub 6 exhibits amazing properties and becomes “OC Purple Giant” (or some other name) then we have the needed tracking and records to know that we can take the same starting germplasm, selected the same way, and get similar results. Without careful records, this is impossible.
Also, the sheer volume of varieties that will eventually be grown on the site would be impossible to manage without some system of reference. We will easily be growing many dozens, or even hundreds of dozens of different crops. Many of the regional, national, and international crop centers around the world that we will be sourcing from have enormous collections and using their accession records enable us to know a great deal about the material they are holding, so as to make better selections when requesting that material. We would like to add to this, and accurate record keeping on our part is a logical extension of our open source model since we can share both the source data from the original institution, collector, or farmer/gardener AND pass along our observations of the materials performance, vulnerabilities, hardiness, taste, and cooking characteristics etc. that may not be available originally. Just as with the “OC Purple Giant,” accession also becomes especially beneficial for us and others when “that bell pepper from Romania shows complete resistance to Colorado potato beetle!” or something similar.
Q: How do you intend to produce spices, mill grain for flour, cooking oil, etc. etc.
To us, “100% food sustainability” means we will demonstrate and open source share a model that doesn’t need external food sources. Having achieved this, what we produce internally versus choosing to buy will be decided through the consensus process.
Q: What is One Community’s stance on pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides?
If it is not safe to eat, we will not be spraying it on our food.
"In order to change an existing paradigm you do not struggle to try and change the problematic model.
You create a new model and make the old one obsolete. That, in essence, is the higher service to which we are all being called."
