Earthbag and Aircrete Dome Home Crowdfunding

One Community is creating a crowdfunding campaign for an open sourced Demonstration Prototype. It will produce a 3-dome guest house structure to compare the building methods of earthbag and aircrete construction and help us fine tune both construction techniques while demonstrating and refining our open source documentation process. The Prototype is also intended to be constructed and permitted on land in the same county as the One Community property to further develop our county relationships while gathering specific data related to these structures and the diverse weather in the area.

Comparing Earthbag vs Aircrete techniques in a real world test like this will help us gather a wide range of objective and comparable data including:

  • Earthbag to Aircrete cost comparison
  • Earthbag to Aircrete labor needs comparison
  • Earthbag to Aircrete construction difficulty and differences comparison
  • Earthbag to Aircrete livability and efficiency comparison (heating, cooling, moisture, sound, etc.)
  • Earthbag to Aircrete durability and maintenance comparison
  • Murphy bed/Interior components installation and construction, and more

This crowdfunding campaign will produce DIY video and website instructions for duplication of all earthbag construction, aircrete construction, and custom furniture construction plans needed for an aircrete and an earthbag construction couples living dome. These domes will feature a fold-down Murphy bed with built-in desk, his and hers changing area, and a loft storage area:

We will also open source a 150 square foot dome (the one in the center of the picture of all three). The reason for open sourcing a 150 sq. ft. dome is to demonstrate even more space efficiency and provide permitted plans and detailed instructions for smaller domes that even more counties would allow to be built without permits. Here is the plan for our 150 sq. ft. dome:

WHY CROWDFUND DO-IT-YOURSELF
DOME HOMES?

The One Community non-profit organization is purposed to create positive and permanent global transformation through demonstrating and open source sharing Highest Good of All approaches to all aspects of living. This crowdfunding campaign will forward that goal by providing people an eco-friendly, durable, beautiful, and DIY option for sustainable housing while also providing One Community the opportunity to do a side-by-side comparison of both the earthbag and aircrete construction methods in preparation for the construction of the complete earthbag (or maybe it will be aircrete) village (Pod 1).

All the domes we will be building will be permitted but small enough to be built without permits in many counties and large enough to support alternative internal designs too. Here are two alternative design examples, the top one is a 150 sq foot studio/office and the bottom is a 200 sq foot complete kitchen and bathroom:

LODGING OPTIONS FOR THE CAMPAIGN

Lodging OptionsThere will be several options available for those wishing to have hands-on participation in this crowdfunding campaign. For those staying on the property there will be available power, internet, running water, solar showers, and temporary bathrooms that will serve until the earthbag bathroom dome is complete. We will also be providing food. Here are the lodging options:

CAMPING

Onsite camping will be available and free. We will provide some camping tents on a first-come first-served basis and everyone else will need to bring their own tent. Bedding, pillows, etc. will be the responsibility of the individual.

STAYING WITH THE LOCALS

This may be an option for anyone who’d like something other than tents, but with much less expense than a hotel. We’ll explore and share the details of this option when we launch the campaign.

LOCAL HOTEL OPTIONS

There are multiple local hotel options and we’ll share those details when we launch the campaign.

FREQUENTLY ANSWERED QUESTIONS

Q: Why are the domes separated, why no central enclosing structure?

We designed the layout the way it is because we desired the domes to be easily duplicated as stand-alone structures. We also saw this layout as an easy one to modify with a central building that would then provide “common space” with access to the 3 side rooms, so we’re hoping someone else will create that once we’re done so we can open source share those plans also. This isn’t the focus of this build for us though.
