Pallet furniture is simple, sturdy, and sustainable furniture made using recycled pallets. These pallets can be found and repurposed from grocery stores, warehouses, or pretty much any other business that receives large deliveries of products or materials. Calling local stores or just checking their trash areas can usually yield free pallets and these pallets comprise almost all the materials of the designs on this page, making furniture like this a very affordable DIY option. Before you go looking, read this article too: “How to Determine If a Wood Pallet Is Safe for Use”
Reusing the wood from pallets that would otherwise end up in a landfill is a great way to repurpose them. By open sourcing these pallet furniture designs, we hope to provide an option for people building their own furniture that is durable, can be assembled easily, and has the option to be constructed using close to 100% repurposed materials. We see using repurposed materials like pallets as especially easy for people building complete teacher/demonstration hubs with any of the 7 village models and/or the Duplicable City Center because of the amount of materials for these structures that will be delivered on pallets.

Here is our initial cost analysis using materials (other than the recycled pallets) sourced 100% using internet ordering options. Note that locally purchasing these materials may be cheaper, especially for things like the glass. Quantities currently listed may not be correct either, we’ve done our best to estimate them accurately but won’t know for sure until we’ve built these if we’ve missed something or miscalculated our needs. Once we’ve constructed them for ourselves, we’ll add the construction videos and update all the details here and below to reflect exactly what we used and learned through the whole process.

Q: Where can I find used or recycled pallets?
Here are some ideas: Call or check the dumpster areas of grocery stores, hardware stores, department stores, and/or other big-box stores. Most of these will happily give them to you for free rather than have to pay to dispose of them.
Q: Are all pallets the same? Does it matter which pallets I use?
No, all pallets aren’t the same and using untreated pallets is preferable. Here’s an article about how to choose your pallets: “How to Determine If a Wood Pallet Is Safe for Use”
Q: I noticed a recycled Pallet Picture Frame in one of the images, are you open sourcing those designs too?
Yes, we are. Here is our initial cost analysis for this using materials (other than the recycled pallets) sourced 100% using internet ordering options.
Q: You mention above about Teacher/Demonstration hubs and sustainable villages you’ll be building, where can I find information about these?
Here is a preview of the 7 villages and Duplicable City Center. Click the image for the Highest Good Housing page with overviews for each and links to the complete open source hubs.
"In order to change an existing paradigm you do not struggle to try and change the problematic model.
You create a new model and make the old one obsolete. That, in essence, is the higher service to which we are all being called."
