Expanding Existing Building Codes

The focus of this task is creating open source tutorials for educating people about their legal rights in relation to sustainable building within the diverse landscape of differing county codes in the US. The goal of these tutorials is to forward widespread adoption of sustainable building methods leading to the natural expansion of existing building codes to recognize and accept these methods alongside already accepted/traditional building methods.

We’d like a tutorial that covers the following areas:

  • What are building codes and why are they important
  • Why people should know their legal rights with their city and county
  • How best to work with city and county officials to create win-win relationships (and avoid legal conflict in the first place)
  • What to do when legal conflict happens despite a person’s best attempts to avoid it
  • Where to find helpful resources
  • Frequently asked questions

Here are some examples of the kinds of buildings and villages we are designing:

Legal Framework for Property Preservation

We’re seeking help to research and structure the legal framework for perpetual property preservation. We want to legally protect it and all residents as much as possible against frivolous lawsuits. We also want to preserve the teacher/demonstration community intent of the property/project against any changes any future Board of Directors, investors, or any other interested parties may intend. The structure we create will serve as a template for others to create teacher/demonstration communities and villages too.
